Department of Energy Leading Us into Darkness
Tuesday, 09 September 2008

The Department of Energy (DOE) has some good information on energy efficiency, like using dark background screensavers (and by extension other applications like WEB PAGES). I can find hints of statistics, like it reducing a CRT monitor's energy consumption by up to 20%. But DOE's EnergyStar Desktop information is no longer available on http://www.microtech.doe.gov. In fact the whole site is down!

Now DOE is really leading the way in energy efficiency: Take down your websites, post no information, and people will no longer access the Internet, thus saving up to 98% energy by not starting your computers in the first place.

The genie is out of the bottle. So until the DOE can find an efficient way of putting it back in its vessel, please checkout the BlackBack project from Rising Phoenix Design for more tips on energy efficient website design.
